God gives each of us a dream, which He uses to fulfill His purpose on Earth. We have already seen how God created His dream, the earth, out of nothing and gave Adam and Eve the dream of filling it with children for Him to love. When Adam and Eve’s sin threatened the dream, God revealed His predetermined plan to send a Savior who would restore man to Himself.

Through the years, man’s wickedness increased, and God was grieved by His creation. He decided to send a great flood to destroy His creation. But what would come of the dream? To preserve His dream, God chose Noah to build an ark in order to preserve a remnant of the animals and humans. Noah faithfully fulfilled his dream assignment, and mankind lived on through Noah’s family.

Years later, when God was ready to reveal more of His plan to redeem humans, He came to Abram and gave him a dream through a promise.

The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.

I will make you into a great nation,

    and I will bless you;

I will make your name great,

    and you will be a blessing.

I will bless those who bless you,

    and whoever curses you I will curse;

and all peoples on earth

    will be blessed through you.”    Genesis 12:1-3

Until this time, Abram was a nobody. He was an unknown man living among a pagan people. But God knew Abram, just as He knows each of us. God came to him, revealed Himself, and called Abram to be a significant part of the dream. We may feel unimportant, but God loves deeply. He calls us to be His children through Jesus, and He wants to use us in His dream of bringing others to Him.

When God revealed Abram’s portion of the dream by making some mighty promises, which included blessing him, making his name great, and bringing a mighty nation through him. Abram had done nothing to deserve these great promises. God chose him and assigned the dream, and He has chosen us and assigned our portion.

In the giving of Abram’s dream, God used the phrase “I will” seven times (with the last one implied). This indicated He would be the One to fulfill the dream. Abram could not make his dream happen. God promised to do all these things, and His word does not fail.

When God assigns our portion of the dream, we can count on Him to lead us, equip us, and energize us to fulfill the dream. Our responsibility is the same as Abram’s. God said to Abram, “Go … to the land I will show you.” Abram’s task was to believe God, follow Him, and obey. God would do the rest.

We can trust God to enable us to do whatever He calls us to do. Abram’s life wasn’t easy. He went through many tests and trials, but God was always with Him helping him. Abram’s portion of the dream would be fulfilled just as God promised it would in Genesis 12:1-3.

God help Abram live the dream of raising a family who worshipped Him. Many years later, God sent Jesus, the Savior He had promised through Abram’s family. When we accept Jesus as our Savior, we become a part of the fulfillment of God’s dream to Abram.

Once we become His children, He gives us the opportunity to take part in the ultimate dream of reconnecting others to God through sharing the gospel.

God kept every promise He made to Abram, and He will keep all His promises to us. Just as He chose Abram and put His dream for him in his heart, He will put His dreams in our hearts and act in our lives to fulfill them. We can show our trust in Him by believing and obeying Him like Abram did.

If you aren’t sure what your God-given dream is, ask Him today to reveal it to you and help you live it as He did Abram. (More about Abram’s dream next week).
