Indescribable Gift

The song “Asleep in The Hay” by David Wise includes the words, “Many a man has sought to be god, destroying the world on his way. But only one God ever thought to become man and He was born on Christmas Day.” These words got me thinking about the depths of the meaning of Christmas.  We celebrate the birth of Christ. We read about a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and laid in a manger. We rejoice as the angels did that day as they proclaimed, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men!” We give gifts to those we love as a reminder of the wise men who brought gift to our young Savior…

But do we take time to reflect on who it was that was born in the stable that day so many years ago? Whose is this Jesus that was born on Christmas Day?

The Bible tells us that Jesus was God.  Speaking of Jesus John 1:1 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth” (John 1:14). Jesus, the Word, God, Himself, became flesh and dwelt among us! He is “Immanuel, which is translated, ‘God with us’” (Matthew 1:23).

We hear stories of kings taking off their royal garments and dressings like paupers to walk among their people to learn how their subjects live. But have we ever heard of a king that would shed his royalty to live among his people for 33 years in order to save his people from certain death? That is exactly what Jesus did. Philippians 2:6-8 tells us that He humbled Himself, took on the form of a servant, and came in the likeness of men. Jesus, God in all His glory, was willing to shed that glory so that He could come and walk among us and ultimately die for us so that we who believe in Him could be saved from eternal damnation and live forever with Him as the sons and daughters of God.

This Christmas let’s reflect on who Jesus is.  When we think of the baby lying in a manger, let’s not fail to contemplate all that Jesus was, and is, and forever will be.

(He is)  Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End;
Faithful and True

(He is)  God made flesh, born of a virgin, laid in a manger
Sought by shepherds and worshipped by kings
Immanuel – God with us; the Image of the invisible God

(He is)   the Bread of Life; the Light of the world;
the Door and the Good Shepherd;
the Resurrection and the Life;
the Way, the Truth, and the Life;
the True Vine; Our All in all

(He is)   The Good teacher and Great High Priest
Heir of all things, yet friend of tax collectors and sinners

(He is)   The Righteous One, the Judge of all creation
Who searches the heart of Man,
The Lamb of God, Our Savior,
Who takes away our sin

(He is)   Our Kinsman Redeemer, the first-born from the dead
The Head of the church, our only God and Savior
The One who went to prepare a place for us,
And the One who is coming again

(He is)   Our guarantee, our peace and sure foundation
The Chief cornerstone, the Crown of splendor
Our Master, the Bright Morning Star
The Wisdom from God, our Wonderful counselor
The Radiance of God’s glory, our Righteousness
He is the Indescribable gift (2 Corinthians 9:15)

(He is)   Prince of Peace, Lord of Lords, King of all Kings
The Holy One of God; The Lord of all Glory,

(He is)   The Holy and Righteous One, the Lord God Almighty,
The One who was and is and is to come
Worthy to receive all glory, honor, and power

(He is)   Messiah,
Our Lord and Savior
The One and Only
The Great I AM

He is JESUS

“Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”                             Philippians 2:8-11
